While working towards her Master’s degree in public health and business at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Tina Rivenbark had no idea it would be an elective course in her program that would have such a long-lasting impact on her and her family. It was in Environmental Science that she learned of the long-lasting and detrimental effects of not recycling even the simplest household waste such as plastic, glass and aluminum.
It takes up to 50 years for a cigarette butt to decompose? A plastic bag decomposes in 10-20 years? One aluminum can hangs around for 80-200 years? A plastic water bottle doesn’t break down for 450 years? A glass bottle can sit in a landfill for 1,000,000 years?
How could this be? And more importantly, why aren’t we all doing our part by recycling at the very least our plastic, glass and aluminum? The Rivenbarks began to realize that though it was very important, it was not always easy as curbside recycling pick-up is not often offered to small businesses and those that live on private roads, in small towns or even outside of the city limits of larger metropolitan areas. So they started small, implementing a change within their own household first, as they reminded each other to recycle those bottles and containers and the trips to the recycling center became a regular routine of the family’s weekend.
Even on the eve of the new N.C. laws mandating recycling, the Rivenbarks learned two interesting but disturbing facts~
• While recycling is available to approximately 95% of North Carolina residents, less than 25% actually recycle most likely because it is not convenient (no curbside recycling service available in their area).
• If every plastic bottle from every residence was recycled that would only account for around 44% of bottles used in N.C. Therefore, there must be an additional 56% of plastic bottles disposed of while at work, the gym, events or commercial centers.
Armed with this information and clear that there were needs to be met, the Rivenbarks made a commitment to start a family-owned business with the goal of making it easier for people of their community to do the right thing, both at home and at work, hence ez2Bgreen was born!
The ez2Bgreen way
At ez2Bgreen, we are concerned with all aspects of the environment. Therefore, we’ve chosen not to use large, noisy, heavy exhaust-emitting commercial vehicles to provide our services.
Instead, our fleet consists of regular passenger vehicles (pick-up trucks) with utility trailers which offer reduced emissions, less wear and tear on roads and noise minimization for our residential and commercial customers as compared to the “waste hauling giants”.
Just another reason to choose ez2Bgreen for your residential and commercial recycling needs!
